Activated Charcoal and Chron’s Disease

Chron’s Disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It causes swelling of the tissues in your digestive tract, which can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, and fatigue.

Some people may be symptom free most of their lives, while others can have severe chronic symptoms that never go away. Treatment can help, but this condition can’t be cured.

Gut inflammation causes pain felt throughout the entire abdomen. People with Chron’s may have an urgent need to go to the bathroom up to 20 times a day.

Symptoms can be sporadic, and flare-ups can be brought on by several triggers: High-fat foods, butter, cheesy dishes, fried foods, spicy foods, sriracha, chili powder. Alcohol, caffeinated coffee/tea, energy drinks.

Over time, Crohn’s disease can lead to other complications, including bowel obstruction, ulcers, fistulas, anal fissures, malnutrition, and other health problems. It can increase your risk for blood clots and colon cancer.

Activated charcoal works by adsorbing various chemicals/toxins ( adsorbing is different from absorbing. Adsorbing involves attraction on a molecular level, whereas absorbing is a physical process such as when a sponge expands by soaking up water). Many theories of the progression of Chron’s disease involve a bacterial imbalance creating chemicals that have deleterious effect. Theoretically regular consumption of charcoal could soak up those chemicals, mitigating the effect of a screwed-up gut biome. The idea would be to always have some mixed in with the chyme in your intestine to reduce the absorption of toxins produced by the bacteria. However, because charcoal interferes with the absorption of many medicines, it is recommended to take charcoal either 90 mins before or after medication.

Activated charcoal is one dietary supplement some people with IBD take to alleviate gastrointestinal tract symptoms, particularly constipation and flatulence. Because intestinal bloating can be caused by excess gas trapped in the stomach, activated charcoal is believed to help reduce symptoms. To use for Chron’s disease, I suggest getting the activated charcoal powder then you have the benefit of the activated charcoal coating and soothing your whole gastrointestinal tract. People keep activated charcoal capsules on hand for when they go out to stop related symptoms and during an attack, so they are also a convenient form of taking activated charcoal.

Some IBD sufferers have reported that it makes them feel “ normal” again. “ Yesterday I had dinner at a steak house, sitting at the table I took 2 capsules with cold water. I ate whatever I wanted. I didn’t have any issues afterward” anonymous.

“For me it’s the only thing I’ve found which works to stop bloating and related symptoms. I get a.c capsules in bulk and literally taking them during an attack is the difference between feeling apathetic, dizzy and like I don’t want to move from bed for days at a time and feeling completely normal. I was amazed to discover that unlike everything prescribed by my G.P (antispasmodics etcetera) it actually worked for me.”

Studies in the use of Activated Charcoal are quite extensive. One method of following published clinical data obtained from several sources would be to access the PubMed database.
